Alumnus Speaks on Forgiveness
January 31, 2019
Upper School Chapel on January 31, 2019, featured Alumnus Alec Cawley, class of 2018, as guest speaker. Alec returned to Foundation Academy to share with current students some lessons he has learned in Forgiveness since graduating.
Before Alec spoke, our praise band led in a time of worship. Our students taking part in the Haiti Mission Project were also recognized. Pastor Ken commissioned the team through prayer. They leave on February 2 for Haiti!
With the help of junior Ben B, Alec showed how holding on to a grudge is like carrying around a rock. With each grudge one holds against another, it’s like adding rocks to a backpack. The more you hold against a person, the more weighed down you become by the burden.
Forgiveness allows one to hand the weight to Christ, and be freed from that burden. Alec shared how once he forgave his friend, he was free to show them the love of Christ again. He was able to begin repairing the relationship with help from the Holy Spirit.
Alec reminded students of how much Christ has already forgiven in us. He read from John 8 about the adulterous woman. According to the Law of Moses, this woman deserved to be stoned to death for her sin. The jewish leaders were using this woman to trap Jesus. However, Jesus responded “The one without sin among you should be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7) When there was no one left to condemn the woman, Jesus chose to forgive her and told her “…Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.” (John 8:11)
This is how we should respond when someone has wronged us, because Jesus has first forgiven us.
Thank you, Alec, for coming back to share with our students! Enjoy the photo gallery from this chapel below.
