Recently, 28 Student Leadership Institute (SLI) students had the privilege of visiting the Marriott Vacation Club headquarters in Kissimmee. Foundation Academy parent Nur Rosa is part of the leadership team there and made the visit possible.
The purpose of our visit was to explore the content of StrengthsFinder 2.0, the Wall Street Journal #1 bestseller that was SLI’s required reading this year. The book includes access to an online assessment that allows each reader to identify their top five talents from the 34 strengths listed. Mrs. Rosa and members of her leadership team treated us to lunch followed by challenging exercises in small groups based on shared strengths.
The time was invaluable for seeing how the material in the book looks in a real-life setting. Marriott Vacation Club uses the StrengthsFinder concept in determining workplace teams. Students returned with a greater awareness of their own strengths, greater appreciation for others’ strengths, and greater certainty of what is possible when we operate as a team.
Of course this concept is nothing new. The Bible speaks eloquently about the value of teamwork in 1 Corinthians 12: one body, made up of many parts, each with its own purpose and value.
