The Science of Sugar

Honors students recently learned a lesson in chemistry while celebrating Christmas on the North Campus! Specifically, our students learned how a chemical change takes place when you add heat to white sugar. The oxygen in the air reacts with the sugar, and the chemical bonds are broken. Sugar turns into a liquid! Our students used this liquid sugar as “cement” for the walls and roofs of their gingerbread houses. Students loved learning about chemistry through this Christmas-themed experiment!
